It is a technology whereby water with impurties is forced through a semi-permeable membrance to produce very pure water, with most of the impurities including dissolved solids are rejected by the membrance and down the drain. The micron rating equivalent of RO is to the order of 0.0005 micron (1 micron = 0.001mm), compared to 30 to 50 microns for pitcher type filters found in department stores.
